Although etching gases such as water vapor have been frequently exploited in the selective synthesis of semiconducting carbon nanotubes toward transistor applications, clear observations of their effects are limited. In this study, we discuss the kinetic effects of methanol on the growth of metallic and semiconducting nanotubes, using an isotope labeling technique. In particular, the contradictory functions of carbon supply and removal to/from catalytic nanoparticles will be traced on individual nanotubes.
