In time-varying metamaterials in which the electric permittivity (ε) and magnetic permeability (μ) are controlled in the time domain, the frequency of the input electromagnetic wave is converted by the modulation frequency of the ε and μ. In contrast to the time-domain control of ε in visible and near-infrared light, we have proposed time modulation of μ in microwaves. In this report, we have directly observed the frequency conversion of microwaves using a time-varying magnetic metamaterial consisting of a transmission line and ferromagnetic alloy of iron and nickel: permalloy.
