Crystal structures of acenes (benzene, naphthalene, anthracene, tetracene) was controlled from herringbone to pi-stacking related structures (brickwork, pitched pi-stack, dimeric pitched pi-stack) by blocking CH-pi interactions between the molecules with selective methylthiolation. Structure-property relationship of these materials was evaluated as single-crystal organic field-effect transistors.
