The technology of converting liquids into micro- and nano-sized mist is crucial for both everyday life and industry. However, it has been challenging to atomize high-viscosity and high-insulation liquids. We have developed a "plasma nanomist generator" and visualized the atomization mechanism using a high-speed camera. As a result, it was revealed that the device atomizes solutions in three modes: instability of the solution jet; physical fragmentation of the solution droplets by the impact of the plasma streamer; and collapse of the droplet surface and generation of a smoke-like mist during the streamer ejection from the solution droplet. These factors act in a chain reaction to generate the mist.
