Two-dimensional arrays of silicon nanodiscs with an aspect ratio of 5 or higher show electromagnetic field enhancement originating from toroidal dipole (TD) resonance. In this study, the near-infrared emission (1.5 μm) of erbium ions (Er3+), whose contributions to the ED and MD transitions are nearly equal, is used as a probe to investigate the effect of TD resonance of silicon nanodisk arrays on the emission efficiency and directivity of each transition, both computationally and experimentally.
