In Toyama, the research and development (R&D) divisions of pharmaceutical companies and medical instrument part suppliers need experts with knowledge of not only engineering but also pharmaceutics and medicine. In Graduate School of Science and Engineering, University of Toyama, we established Pharma-Medical Engineer Program in 2014 to nurture such interdisciplinary experts. The participants might take lectures related to pharma-medical industry in Department of Engineering, Department of Science, Graduate School of Science and Engineering, and Graduate School of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences; laboratory classes on equipment used in pharma-medical industry; lectures given by R&Ders in pharma-medical companies, factory tours, and various training for job finding in pharma-medical industry. This program and its successor have attracted many students and would thus provide some tips for interdisciplinary education for students majoring in science and engineering.
