We report the results on a "fully planar solar-pumped laser" that does not require light focusing and therefore does not require solar tracking. A 400-m Nd3+-doped fiber is affixed to a 30-cm-diameter disk, and an organic dye film is used as a sensitizer. The device is sandwiched by a dichroic mirror and a high-reflectance mirror for photon confinement, resulting in the lateral excitation of the fiber. A 34 mW of laser output is obtained with a slope efficiency of 0.1%. Additionally, the results of an experiment in which the laser output was observed for 2.5 hours without sunlight tracking are presented.
