Double-network (DN) gels are tough gels obtained through interpenetrating the brittle and stretchable polymer networks. Despite having a high solvent content of approximately 90 wt%, DN gels exhibit remarkable durability, withstanding large stress without breaking. The development of DN gels has completely overturned the common understanding: “a gel is intrinsically brittle”. The tearing energy of optimized DN gels has reached 1,000-10,000 J m-2, while that of single network gels is typically 1-100 J m-2. In this presentation, I will outline the basic toughening mechanism of DN gels, known as the sacrificial bond principle. I will also introduce some recent findings about the fracture of DN gels, such as microscopic fracture behavior and environmental effects on the fracture.
