Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM), a fundamental technology widely used in long-haul optical communications, requires frequency stabilization of the light sources for each WDM channel. Conventionally, optical frequency references based on acetylene molecules have been used in optical communication systems; however, their absorption lines often do not coincide with the center wavelengths of individual WDM channels. To address this issue, we developed optical frequency references near the acetylene absorption region by generating the third harmonic of a 1542-nm telecommunications-band laser and performing saturated absorption spectroscopy of molecular iodine in the visible region.
