Semiconductor nanowires are elongated and anisotropic semiconductor structures with cross-sectional size ranging from submicron down to a few nanometers. As fundamental building blocks of novel electronics capable of overcoming conventional limits, a variety of device applications have been reported, including vertical surrounding-gate FETs, lasers, and solar cells. In this presentation, after a brief review on the formation of compound semiconductor nanowires by selective-area metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy, we show some our recent studies on their applications for optical devices.
