We compared the lasing properties of various two-dimensional random lasers using the finite-difference time-domain method. We examined structures consisting of a solid gain medium with air holes, a structure in which the gain medium filled the gaps between titanium dioxide nanopillars, and a structure in which gain medium was injected into titanium dioxide with nanoholes. Evaluation of their emission spectra revealed that the nanopillar structure yielded particularly high peak intensity. The results demonstrated that achieving high lasing efficiency requires a combination of sufficient scattering strength and an amplification region.
