The relationship between thermal relaxation behavior and ductility was investigated in Zr-based metallic glasses subjected to high-pressure torsion (HPT). As a result, a unique initial relaxation process that cannot be explained by the conventional free-volume relaxation model was identified. Furthermore, a decrease in the apparent activation energy, Eβ, was observed during this process, and ductility emerged only under such conditions. The present study demonstrates that the ductility of metallic glasses can be systematically interpreted in terms of the decrease in Eβ, rather than the amount of free volume, and reveals that the internal stress state is involved as a key contributing factor.
