Toward the effective utilization of the large amount of untapped waste heat present in industrial fields, energy-harvesting technologies that convert thermal radiation into electricity are increasingly required. In this study, we fabricated an optical rectenna device using a metal–insulator–metal (MIM) metamaterial resonator, targeting mid-infrared light at 6.1 µm, which is difficult to convert into electricity using conventional PV cells. We proposed a device structure in which the MIM resonator functions as both an antenna and an MIM tunnel diode, and experimentally demonstrated power generation based on the rectenna principle.
