History-dependent photoisomerization is a key property for information processing and natural intelligence. In this study, we investigated the history dependence of local photoisomerization on the surface of diarylethene crystals. Local photoisomerization was induced using an optical near-field, and the influence of preceding photoisomerization events on subsequent photoisomerization, as well as the spatial extent of this effect, was evaluated.
