Aluminate and aluminosilicate compounds are attractive host materials for 3d transition-metal luminescent centers. Appropriate combinations of host lattices and activator ions result in a range of luminescence spanning the red to near-infrared spectral region. This presentation will introduce the luminescence properties of Fe3+, Mn4+, and Cr3+ centers in aluminate and aluminosilicate hosts and discuss their correlation with the crystal structures.
