Drought and salt stress caused by global environmental change is a major probable for agriculture. Na is not an essential element for plants and is a major cause of salinity stress. The Na transporter HKT1 was identified in 2000, and enhanced expression of HKT1 was subsequently shown to improve salt tolerance in plants (Uchiyama et al. Sci Adv, 2023). K is a major intracellular element that is essential for maintaining cellular functions and sustaining life. Under drought conditions, stomata closure prevents excessive water loss and dehydration (Yamanashi et al. PNAS, 2025; Muraoka et al. Sci Adv, 2026). To improve plant adaptation to transient environmental fluctuations, we isolated chemical regulators of K channels, biostimulants. These compounds induced drought tolerance in plants (Sato et al. Nat Comm, 2026).
