High-aspect-ratio gold nanoblock arrays exhibiting a highly sensitive localized surface plasmon resonance response were designed using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) calculations and fabricated by electron beam lithography. The 90 × 250 × 60 nm structure showed large peak shifts after the formation of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) and a dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) lipid bilayer, demonstrating highly sensitive detection of small local refractive-index changes.
