Laser-induced phase transitions were locally introduced into Sb2Se3 phase-change thin films to fabricate one-dimensional gratings and two-dimensional square-lattice photonic crystal structures without lithography. Band dispersion was observed through diffraction measurements and photonic band spectroscopy. This method enables periodic refractive-index distributions to be directly written at arbitrary locations after film deposition and is expected to facilitate the local formation and modification of photonic structures.
