We are developing a high-pulse-energy laser system for vacuum-ultraviolet frequency-comb generation. The system employs multi-stage amplification based on a mode-locked Yb:KYW seed laser and a Yb:LuAG crystal as the gain medium. To achieve high pulse energy, the amplifier is designed to operate in a double-pass geometry. In this presentation, we report initial measurements of the amplification characteristics obtained in a single-pass configuration. We also discuss the current progress and future prospects for gain enhancement using a double-pass configuration.
