In plasma-driven electrolysis (PDE) of HAuCl4 aqueous solution, the addition of ethanol induces the self-organized formation of a structure in which nanometer-sized particles cover larger particles at the anode side. To investigate the formation mechanism, we compared two conditions with different addition timing: simultaneous addition of HAuCl4 and ethanol, versus addition of HAuCl4 after plasma irradiation of the ethanol solution. The structure formed only under simultaneous addition, indicating that ethanol decomposition products in the solution alone are insufficient; their adsorption must occur concurrently with the nucleation and growth of Au particles. A similar surface-covering structure was also observed using AgNO3, suggesting that this phenomenon is not specific to gold chloride.
