Dodecylammonium iodide (DDAI) has attracted attention as a precursor for organic–inorganic layered hybrid materials with high ambient stability. We have previously reported that DDAI thin films prepared by vacuum deposition transform in air into a phase with a different interlayer spacing, and that moisture is the primary factor driving this change. However, it remains unclear whether this phase is a hydrate or a metastable phase induced by interaction with water molecules. In this study, we investigate the origin of this moisture-induced phase transition.
