In this study, we propose a new optical output evaluation method, termed the "Spectrum Monitor," for finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) analysis of circular-defect photonic crystal (CirD) lasers aimed at low-power and high-capacity optical communications. Unlike the conventional energy monitor, which evaluates optical output by spatial integration, the proposed method calculates the optical intensity from the Fourier transform of a single-point magnetic field component. The method was applied to CirD lasers, and the integration time and monitor position were optimized. The results demonstrated output characteristics comparable to those obtained with the conventional method, thereby verifying the effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed approach.
