In connection with the sources of non-equilibrium quasiparticles—a problem in superconducting quantum computers and other systems—we focused on superconducting-to-normal-metal junctions (SN junctions), which are present in many superconducting circuits, and measured quantum radiation from the junctions associated with quasiparticle recombination while varying the junction bias. As a result, in the voltage region where Andreev reflection—previously thought not to involve quantum radiation—occurs, we detected quantum radiation starting at a voltage equivalent to one-third of the effective superconducting gap of the S electrode, which had been reduced by the inverse proximity effect.
