We developed a one-pore synthesis method in which a solid-state nanopore is used as a reaction field and the metal-ion flux is controlled by the transmembrane voltage to form an ultrathin ionic nanogel in situ within a single pore. Because its ion selectivity can be designed by selecting appropriate solutes and metal ions, this method is expected to enable power-generating membranes that combine high permeability and high selectivity, with potential applications in salinity-gradient power generation, desalination, and iontronic devices.
