To elucidate the devitrification (degradation) mechanism of silica glass for information devices, we focused on the deliquescence of alkali metal salts and evaluated the effect of atmospheric moisture. After heat treatment at 1000°C, deliquescent NaCl penetrated the interior of the glass. In contrast, Na2CO3, which has low deliquescence, remained unreacted on the surface and transformed over time into vine-like crystals containing a high concentration of Na. These findings support the mechanism that the reaction between impurities and glass proceeds with atmospheric moisture acting as a catalyst.
