Graphite structures formed inside diamond are expected to be applied to photonic circuits, biosensors, and microfluidic devices. When an ultrashort-pulse laser is tightly focused inside the material, a localized phase transition occurs, and a graphitization wave propagates from the generated graphite region. However, the propagation process has not yet been fully elucidated. In this study, we observe this phenomenon on picosecond to nanosecond time scales and clarify the time scale of graphitization propagation.
