High-power short pulse lasers in 2 μm wavelength region are attractive due to their applications such as nonlinear frequency conversion to the mid-infrared and soft-X-ray regions. Ho3+-doped lasers have received growing interest owing to their high optical-to-optical conversion efficiency, the availability of high-power Tm laser pump sources, and their capability for operation at 2.1 μm. In this study, we characterized a newly fabricated mixed-sesquioxide Ho:YScO3 crystal and demonstrated, the first SESAM mode-locked laser operation.
