Chalcopyrite-structured CIS-based thin-film solar cells (a family of CuInSe2-based compounds containing elements such as Ag, Ga, and S) are expected to enable applications that take advantage of characteristics and functionalities distinct from those of conventional crystalline silicon solar cells. This presentation focuses on wide-bandgap chalcopyrite materials, which are particularly promising for use in tandem solar cells as top-cell photoabsorbers, and provides an overview of the current status of research and development as well as their potential applications.
