To achieve high-sensitivity measurement of weak electric THz fields, we propose background-free electro-optic sampling, in which the background light is suppressed by destructive interference with an anti-phase reference pulse. We numerically demonstrate that detector saturation is mitigated, allowing a higher probe power to be used and thereby increasing the signal.
