We report a spatial and polarization mode multiplexer for space-division-multiplexed optical communications. We developed vertically stacked three-layer dielectric metasurfaces, which convert and multiplex 20 X/Y-polarized Gaussian beams into 20 Hermite–Gaussian modes. A proof-of-concept device with an aperture diameter of 800 μm was fabricated, and the desired 20-mode operation was confirmed at a wavelength of 1550 nm, demonstrating a scalable optical interface for the space-division-multiplexed systems.
