Optical nanofibers fabricated using a standard oxyhydrogen flame exhibit losses at wavelengths around 1380 nm due to absorption by hydroxyl groups generated during the fabrication process. This loss poses a challenge for the realization of quantum electrodynamic systems using ytterbium atoms. We have developed a method to reduce these hydroxyl groups by heating them with a laser guided within the nanofiber under vacuum conditions. The temperature of the optical nanofiber during heating is estimated using an interferometer.
