Mechanoluminescence (ML) materials emit light in response to mechanical stimuli after optical excitation and are expected to be applied to structural health monitoring. ML induced by tensile, compressive, bending, torsional, and frictional stresses has been widely studied. However, reports on ML induced by hydrostatic pressure remain limited. In this study, the ML intensity of SrAl2O4: Eu2+ (SAOE) under uniaxial and hydrostatic compression was quantitatively compared. Clear ML was observed under both stress conditions. The ML intensity showed a linear increase with applied stress. Furthermore, the ML intensities obtained under uniaxial and hydrostatic compression were at the same level.
