Individual laser pulses are split and recombined in a cascade of asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometers to produce arbitrary dual, triple, or quadruple pulse trains. A simulation is used to find the optimal pulse profiles for pumping a standard microring resonator, which is then verified experimentally using silicon-on-insulator photonic chips. The spectral purity and brightness of photon pairs are improved above the single pulse limit, overcoming the trade-off between these parameters.
