After completing a PhD, many people aspire to become researchers. I was no exception. Having studied condensed matter theory at Osaka University, I initially envisioned a career in academic research.
My career, however, took a different path. Starting as a postdoctoral researcher, I moved between research, science & technology policy, and research support through positions at JST, MEXT, the University of Tokyo, and currently NIMS.
Researchers create new knowledge, but connecting that knowledge to society requires research funding, strategy, institutional management, and science & technology policy. Throughout my career, I have experienced both sides of this landscape: conducting research and supporting it.
In this talk, I will reflect on my career journey, discuss key decisions at major turning points, explore career paths beyond academia, and share how skills developed during doctoral training can be applied in diverse professional settings. I hope this talk will encourage students, early-career researchers, high school students, and parents to consider the many possibilities available beyond research.
