As contemporary society becomes increasingly complex and knowledge-intensive, the demand for highly specialized human resources has continued to grow. Nevertheless, in Japan, the number of students progressing to master’s and doctoral programs has shown little substantial change, and career choices among highly educated individuals remain largely shaped by conventional institutional and social frameworks. This presentation reconsiders doctoral degree holders not only as future academic researchers, but also as human resources who contribute to the knowledge economy. Drawing on the speaker’s own practical experiences beyond conventional career trajectories, the presentation discusses the significance of relativizing existing career paths as only one set of possible options. It also considers the social, educational, and institutional mechanisms through which individuals remain within established patterns of career choice.
