Identification of genes related to the acquisition of totipotency for somatic nuclei and their functions during preimplantation development

Totipotency is the ability to contribute to all the cell lineages including extraembryonic lineages during development. The fertilized oocyte and early embryo are the only totipotent cells in most organisms with sexual reproduction. Although the molecular mechanisms underlying totipotency remains unclear, unfertilized oocytes should have something to give rise to totipotency. In this symposium, we will focus on the molecular features of oocytes and early embryos that are thought to regulate their totipotency. Such information would help us better understand totipotency.
