Organo-montmorillonite (OMt) can efficiently remove perchlorate, an emerging contaminant, with high adsorption capacity and selectivity. However, release of modifier is a deficiency of OMt. To inhibit the release of alkylammonium, alginate was used to encapsulate OMt in bead. Adsorption capacity of perchlorate decreased after encapsulation by alginate, but the alkylammonium release was significantly inhibited. Co-existence of strontium improved the perchlorate adsorption onto OMt/alginate beads.
