In this study, the effect of water content on rock strength and time dependent behavior was investigated with conducting uniaxial compression tests under the following six conditions: oven-dried, vacuum-dried, air-dried, air-dried for one day, immersed in water and water-saturated conditions. The samples used in this study were four Japanese rocks: Sanjome andesite, Tage tuff, Kimachi sandstone and Akiyoshi marble. The tests were performed with alternating loading rate to estimate the time dependence of the rocks. From the experimental results, the negative effects of water content on the peak strength and failure stain were observed. As well, the effect of water content on two indexes, which represent the degree of the time dependence, were investigated and discussed with the constitutive equation.
