Scandium (Sc), one of the rare earth elements, is the lightest transition metal and has a high melting temperature. Sc is mainly obtained as a by-product during processing of various ores, residues, tailings and waster liquors in the production of other metals such as rare earths, uranium, titanium, tungsten, aluminium, nickel, tantalum and niobium.Sc is reported is to be one of the most effective additive for superior properties including light weight, high strength, good thermal resistance and long durability to aluminium (Al) alloys.Electrolysis for producing of Al-Sc alloys has been proposed. In this study, Al-Sc alloy was prepared by the electrolysis process through the dissolution of Sc2O3 in combination of fluoride molten salts without chloride salts.
