本研究では、鉱山で使用された臼を鉱山臼、回転式鉱山臼を金挽臼とする。「黒川型」「湯之奥型」「定形型」の金挽臼について調査研究を進めているが、臼形状はさることながら、臼製作作業に伴う労力、人工、上臼と下臼の磨り面形状の相互関係、粉成された鉱石の量、採掘域の在り様と関係性など、まだまだ謎に包まれていることが多い。遺跡や山金生産の現場に残された数々の臼、そしてそれらの使用痕から、最終的には、一つの金挽臼でどれだけの量の鉱石を微粉化することが可能であったか、産鉱量の考察・推測について、臼製作実験を通し、長期的な検証を試みるものである。
