Next-Generation Neuroscience Research Through the Measurement and Manipulation of Multicellular Circuit Dynamics

Higher-order brain functions such as learning, memory, and emotion are efficiently manifested when individual neurons in multiple brain regions spatially and temporally orchestrated their activity, thereby generating coordinated neural population activity (i.e., neural circuit activity). To date, we have utilized in vivo imaging to visualize and study the structure and function of neurons and glial cells required for these higher-order brain functions. In this work, we have, for example, elucidated the physiological and pathological regulatory mechanisms governing glial cell synapses and the blood-brain barrier, and identified their contributions to these neural circuit activities. Furthermore, to recreate such neural and glial circuit activities, we have developed a novel holographic microscope and are advancing our research by manipulating cells to demonstrate brain function. In this presentation, I would like to discuss the latest findings obtained using these optical technologies.
