Multimodal Approaches to Capturing Awake Brain Activity: Applications in Chronic Pain Research

Disease progression is driven by dynamic interactions between cells and their microenvironment, requiring observation in living organisms. Intravital Microscopy (IVM) enables direct visualization of cellular and vascular events at single-cell resolution, overcoming the limitations of conventional imaging and ex vivo histology. This seminar will introduce advanced confocal and two-photon intravital microscopy platforms for longitudinal imaging in rodent models. Applications include vascular remodeling, immune cell trafficking, inflammatory responses, tumor microenvironment dynamics, and therapeutic evaluation. Special emphasis will be placed on awake-state imaging, which allows observation of physiological responses without the influence of anesthesia. Representative examples from neuroscience, immunology, oncology, and vascular biology will demonstrate how IVM advances disease research and translational medicine.
