Toward Integrated Research on Brain Organoids, Second-Generation BMI, and AI

Understanding the principles of brain information processing and translating them into medicine, engineering, and artificial intelligence is one of the major challenges in contemporary neuroscience. This mini-symposium, organized by Hideyuki Okano (Keio University), will explore future directions in neuroscience through the integration of brain organoids, second-generation brain–machine interfaces (BMI), and AI-driven research.

Speakers Hiroaki Wake (National Institute for Physiological Sciences) and Kento Imaizumi (Stanford University) will present cutting-edge approaches to neural circuit dynamics, human iPSC-derived brain organoids, and their potential connection with artificial systems. A key focus will be the shift from simply observing neural circuits to reconstructing, interfacing, and testing their information-processing capacities using AI, devices, and computational methods.

A panel discussion with Drs. Ikeuchi (University of Tokyo) and Hayashi (RIKEN CBS) will further address how Japan’s strengths in iPSC biology, neuroscience, data science, and AI can be combined to open a new international research frontier. This symposium aims to stimulate discussion on the future of brain science, organoid intelligence, next-generation BMI, and hybrid biological–artificial intelligence.
