Macrophages for brain immunity and non-immunity

All organs and tissues in the body contain macrophages, the innate immune cells, which play an essential role in maintaining homeostasis by phagocytosing and removing foreign substances and inducing inflammatory responses. In the brain, in addition to microglia in the parenchyma, CNS border-asscoiated macrophages located at the interfaces such as the meninges play a role not only in immune responses but also in the regulation and maintenance of neural functions. In this seminar, I will introduce the cellular characteristics and diverse functions of brain macrophages, with particular attention to the recent findings in the field.
