Although many cases to be solved arise in clinical practice, few example in daily work lead to clinical research. In addition, when research does take place, in many instances, pharmacists work to address their questions alone. One potential reason may be difficulty for pharmacists planning research to train staff from many different professional fields in essential clinical research practices. They thus consider the fusion of basic and clinical research to be out of reach. This current impediment necessitates creation of a situation in which different perspectives can be incorporated into research by establishing collaborations involving professionals from multiple occupations. Such collaborations that result in collected data form a basis for multidisciplinary conference presentations and collaboratively written treatises. Some problems in clinical practice can only be solved by conducting research that makes full use of pharmaceutical sciences. Therefore, pharmacists engaged in clinical practice are required to determine whether a given problem would be addressed by pharmacy, and further determine whether it would be solved in the field research or at the bench, and implement it.
In this symposium, we will present actual examples of studies that have integrated basic and clinical research, and introduce points for implementation. We will also consider the future of the fusion of basic and clinical research required for pharmacological research.
