Biosynthesis of cytotoxic natural products from marine sponges

Natural products are irreplaceable modalities that occupy an important position as a pharmaceutical resource due to their diverse skeletons and specific biological activities. Recently, the development of pharmaceuticals based on natural products has once again attracted considerable attention. In particular, the development of antibiotics based on new mechanisms of action is being promoted around the world to address urgent issues such as the fight against drug-resistant bacteria. Furthermore, the more promising development of drug discovery based on medium-sized molecules has been supported, and natural products, which are a treasure trove of molecular structures with relatively high molecular weights, are attracting attention as a drug discovery resource. Under these circumstances, it is important for natural product chemistry to further expand the diversity of natural products as candidate compounds for drug discovery in order to meet the expectations of society. In this PSJ-PSK Joint Symposium titled "Natural products in drug discovery", we have invited two cutting-edge researchers from Korea to present a recent drug discovery approach based on natural products. In addition, two speakers from Japan will discuss about recent progress in biosynthetic studies on natural products. This will be a nice opportunity to discuss future directions to further facilitate natural product-based drug discovery.
