I invented the Nd-Fe-B sintered magnet in 1982. Since then, I have been working on the industrialization and basic research of this magnet together with my colleagues at Sumitomo Special Metals in 1980s and with members of my companies till this day. In this article, I would like to talk about the invention and industrialization of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets, as well as our efforts in basic research from the beginning to now.
The development of the Nd-Fe-B sintered magnet was a major innovation. The members of my research team that produced it were all in their 20s and 30s, including myself. I believe that it is young people who create innovation, and that only young people can do it.
Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets have made great strides industrially. However, this magnet as an industrial material still has many problems. In order to solve the problems, I am working on the following research topics:
1. Development of heat-resistant Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets without heavy rare earths
2. Near Net Shape Production Process for Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets
3. Development of low eddy current loss laminated magnets for EVs
I will report the progresses of these research topics.
