The effect of vagus nerve stimulation for drug-resistant epilepsy

Recent research on the autonomic nervous system has focused not only on motor nerves from the brain to effector organs but also increasingly on sensory nerves transmitting signals from effector organs to the brain. In particular, vagus nerve stimulation therapy has shown therapeutic effects in conditions such as epilepsy, headache, and treatment-resistant depression. However, the underlying mechanisms of these effects remain largely unclear.In this symposium, we will focus on the vagal afferent nerves, a form of interoceptive sensory nerves that function below the level of consciousness, and explore their novel physiological roles and mechanisms of action. We have invited two leading clinical researchers and two basic science researchers in this field to present the latest findings.
