In recent years, research and development of multi-core fiber (MCF) has become increasingly active, and >10Pb/s transmission experiments have been demonstrated. In addition, the application of MCF is expected in short-distance applications, such as data center applications. Since multi-mode (MM) VCSELs are often used in data center applications, special designs, such as few-mode or MM, may be required. Also, even if the MCF is designed to be single mode (SM), the higher-order mode (HOM) may not be fully removed in the short distance, and the HOM effects may remain. Furthermore, even if each core is designed as SM, it has been reported that, in multi-layer MCFs including the depressed layer for each core, the cutoff wavelength increases in the inner cores, which may arise additional challenges for short-length MCFs. This time, we studied the XT characteristics with the influence of HOM in MCFs for short-distance and short-wavelength applications based on 2-core and 37-core fiber designs, and found out that, especially for short-distance applications, it is necessary to carefully consider these effects.
