Microstrip antennas (MSAs) are widely used in various applications such as communications, broadcasting, and radar due to their advantages, including compact size, low profile, and light weight. An ring patch antenna, which employs as its radiating element a circular MSA with its central portion removed and the inner edge of the ring-shaped patch short-circuited to the ground plane, enables integration with other antenna elements through the electrically shorted structure formed within the patch. However, the frequency characteristics of ring patch antennas are generally narrowband, similar to those of conventional circular MSAs. In this study, a broadband ring patch antenna using a stacked configuration is investigated.
